Candi Stanton Set to Release New Gospel Project Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008 21:42

Former disco singer Candi Staton will release her first gospel CD “I Will Sing My Praise to You” (Emtro Gospel) in 6 years on October 21, 2008. The singer is widely known for the 1976 million-seller “Young Hearts Run Free." Her new single “Just Jesus” was one of the most added songs at gospel radio last week and continues to build its audience.

Staton’s song “When Will I?” is featured in the new Tyler Perry film “The Family That Preys…” that opens nationally on September 12, 2008. The film stars Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard and Oscar winner Kathy Bates.

Other voices appearing in the film include Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight, Janet Jackson, Lee Ann Womack and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

“When Will I?” was written by Nashville songwriter Dan Tyler, who has composed hits for Leann Rimes and Kenny Rogers. “Like many people, I struggle with depression… I have consulted therapists, taken medications, read a truckload of self-help books, and, as a believer, prayed and meditated regularly.  But, despite my efforts, there are times when the stresses of life almost overwhelm me and I am left feeling like I haven't made any progress in attaining lasting peace of mind.”

“One morning in the late 90's, I awoke in a dark mental place and the question kept ringing in my head - when will I ever learn?  Putting my feelings into songs has been a lifesaver for me and I took my despair and picked up my guitar and allowed the words and music to flow… Candi Staton's brilliant interpretation of the song is one of the highlights of my 40 years as a songwriter.  For me, having a great artist like Candi sing my song is a reward beyond measure.  I know her incredible voice will carry the song's message to a wide audience and touch people all over the world.”
